Il Contadino
Big flavour, big-hearted service, big vibes.
This Parktown North stalwart trades in big-hearted, slightly rowdy trattoria energy, where tables fill quickly, one glass of wine easily becomes two, and regulars are greeted like family. “Il Contadino” means “the farmer” in Italian, and chef James has put together a menu that is an ode to the “peasant food” of the Italian countryside. How does that play out on the plate? Think acorn-fed wild boar ragu, or heaped servings of Bolognese atop freshly made tagliatelle. There’s a playful edge to certain dishes, too – such as the deconstructed Caprese (basil mousse, marinated cherry tomatoes, olive oil, pulled mozzarella and a drizzle of aged balsamic) or the feather-light tempura-battered zucchini. The menu is designed for sharing, but dishes are so tasty you may find yourself defending your plate against your tablemate. Unpolished in the best way, Il Contadino delivers a convivial, full-bellied experience that keeps its loyal crowd coming back.
Don't leave without trying:
The panzanella salad – a rustic Tuscan mix of tomatoes, bread and olive oil that shows off the kitchen’s commitment to ingredient-led dishes – or the spinach and sundried-tomato pizza.
