Widely known as one of the best breakfast spots in the Witzenberg area, Kole & Deeg (the Afrikaans translates to “coals and dough”) in Tulbagh draws devoted crowds for its moreish roosterkoek-based fare and delicious coffee. Fresh roosterkoek and breakfast are a match made in heaven and you could do worse than sitting back to enjoy the Sammy (smoked salmon, poached eggs, avo, capers and cream cheese) or dive into the popular Leeuloop brekkie with BBQ-basted beef, fried eggs and Cheddar. There are some good options for the kids, plus a selection of wraps, burgers and sarmies to round out the offering. A very good morning drinks menu will have you properly hydrated, and there’s a small and highly local offering of wines to add some leisure to your lunch. A true family undertaking, Kole & Deeg clearly plays a big role in the community and offers a warm welcome and efficient, very friendly service.

Don't leave without trying:
For lunch, the spicy lamb meatballs in a tomato-and-chilli sauce, with crispy onion rings, on a roosterkoek.
