Super Sconto
An old-school Italian deli and café woven into Joburg history.
For Joburg Italians and Italophiles, a weekly stop at Super Sconto is something of a ritual. Opened in 1996, it combines an old-school Italian deli, grocery store and casual café that offers “meals prepared by nonna”. The shelves of this family-run institution are packed with everything from specialty tomatoes, meats and cheese to imported pasta, olive oils, biscuits and even Italian haircare and household cleaning products. Upstairs, you’ll find the deli counter brimming with cold meats, artisanal cheese and pickled and roast veggies. Grab a table and a cup of coffee while you wait for your hot panino, home-made lasagne or authentic pizza. The atmosphere is wonderfully lived-in, the portions generous and the sense of community unmistakable. A small but enduring slice of Italy in Johannesburg.
