It could be said that New York Bagels in the exciting East City precinct of Cape Town is the gold standard of good bagels – you’ll just have to see for yourself why locals and visitors alike flock to this spot. Busting out fresh, traditional, hand-made boiled bagels every day (and often selling out of favourites), it’s almost impossible to go wrong with your order. Start your day with a filling BART bagel (bacon, avo, slow-roasted tomato and mayo), or grab a chicken schnitzel bagel with free-range chicken schnitzel, pickles and salad greens for lunch. As befitting a NY-style deli, there are some great sandos too, and the Reuben (house-made pastrami, Emmenthal cheese and pickled red slaw) deserves special mention. The coffee is good, the vibes are friendly and service is fast. You can also buy regular bagels to enjoy at home – and it would be a mistake to leave without a slice of their famous NY-style cheesecake.
