If you’re travelling along the N2 just outside Swellendam and feeling a little hungry, we suggest pulling off here for what some say is the best roosterkoek in the region. It’s freshly made over an open fire, perfectly fluffy inside and crispy outside. Fillings include the likes of the very popular chicken mayo, but there are many other options such as traditional cheese and jam, boerewors, curried mince and the adventurous steak, cheese and mushroom sauce. The building dates from the 1700s when a trading post was first established here under the Dutch East India Company. There’s plenty to explore – make sure you browse the shop for something to enjoy later before you hit the road.

Don't leave without trying:
The bacon, egg and cheese, or the jam-and-cheese roosterkoek.
