On a street corner in a buzzing area of Maitland there awaits a wonderful surprise for the adventurous diner: bold, flavourful street food that you’ll be thinking about for a long time after your visit. Helmed by the owners of the Sense of Taste chef’s school next door, Debs and chef Peter Ayub, Urban Playground serves as both a training ground for their students and a showcase of their wonderful cuisine. Staff are energetic and clearly pumped to be there, and the atmosphere is young and fun. The food runs the gamut of global flavours – expect Mexican ceviche tacos and Moroccan lamb tagine – and local delights such as bobotie spring rolls and Woodstock samoosas. It’s the kind of place where you can order a whole Peking duck with all the trimmings in advance to share as a feast with friends. Everything is super-fresh and of the best quality, loaded with flavour and beautifully presented. Don’t sleep on this eatery.

Don't leave without trying:
The Thai pork belly with sticky rice.
