The suburb of Vredehoek in Cape Town is lucky to have quite a few great local restaurants, but Villa, as it is affectionately known by locals, might just wear the crown as the favourite. For decades, this convivial eatery has been serving simple but super-flavourful Portuguese food to generations of appreciative diners. You’ll find all the usual suspects, including sardines, trinchado, espetadas, ribs and peri-peri dishes. Interestingly, it’s also known for serving a very good schnitzel. Of course, you can indulge in some fruits of the sea, such as Patagonian calamari and a punchy Mozambican prawn curry. The wine list is, unusually for Cape Town, very well priced. The “bar vibes” can get quite loud at night, so be prepared to come with your “outdoor voice”. It’s all very friendly and festive, and you’ll leave feeling satisfied and with a smile on your face.

Don't leave without trying:
The peri-peri chicken.
