Brothers Jeremy and Ben Gibbs grew up on farms across South Africa, worked their way through European kitchens, then followed their instincts home – choosing George for its natural beauty and the extraordinary Klein Karoo larder on its doorstep. The result is 101 Meade Street, a neighbourhood restaurant built around a philosophy of seasonal, simple and social food made using fresh, local produce. You won’t go wrong with something from the grill – all the 28-day-dry-aged steaks and game are served with 101 Meade’s signature roasted bone marrow. There are also lighter options (think fish naan tacos, mushroom parfait or togorarashi tuna) and contemporary South African mains such as grilled kudu fillet with brandied apricots and truffle-Parmesan potato wedges. The breakfast and lunch menus offer both European and South African classics (all with locally roasted coffee and artisanal breads, of course). Stop in and test the theory that this could be the best restaurant in George.

Don't leave without trying:
The braised shortrib, kudu fillet, or anything from the dry-aged grill with café au lait sauce.
