Berlin Bear cheerfully delivers on its promise of being “a place worth hibernating at”. It has carved out a niche with its playful “Afrikanschen” identity: a fusion of the warmth, culinary traditions and spirit of the Afrikaans and German communities. Enjoy a drink in the lapa before helping yourself to starters of skilpadjies, braaibroodjies and blooming onions, among others. The sweet or savoury loaded waffles are legendary, but you’ll also find burgers, hotdogs (boerie or Frankfurter, of course), pizza, steak, stews and schnitzels on the menu. If the weather’s fine, grab a table in the tranquil garden, where a kiddies’ play area doubles as childcare for the afternoon. Quiz nights, a Sunday plated carvery, Bingo competitions and other high jinks complete the all-round-good-times vibe.

Don't leave without trying:
… to beat the Berlin Bear Challenge Burger. If you can finish this monster 1.86kg burger stack – complete with four juicy beef patties, three crumbed chicken patties, eight crispy bacon strips, melted cheese, creamy cheese sauce, fresh lettuce and tomato, golden fries and a one-litre milkshake – in under 20 minutes, your meal is free.
