With a row of Vespas parked out front, and tables spilling onto 4th Avenue’s ever-buzzy pavement, Bottega immediately invites you inside. For 20 years, it’s been providing Parkhurst’s who’s who with consistently good Italian fare. Whether you pop in at daybreak for an espresso and Italian pastry, or you’re part of the “linger longer” crowd for dinner, the experience is unfussy, energetic and reliably delicious. The chalkboard menu is an ode to classic Italian: generous antipasti made to share; all the saltimbocca, steak and ribs a carnivore could ask for; and heaped bowls of silky pasta. Owner Saverio Cardillo has been cultivating Bottega’s whisky collection since 2013, so a tasting here feels practically mandatory. (No time to visit in Parkhurst? Pop into the Bottega Whisky & Wine Bar at OR Tambo International Airport before you leave SA.)

Don't leave without trying:
The tartare, or really any item on the nightly-changing pasta menu.
