Don't let the semi-industrial surroundings put you off – the perpetually full carpark outside the Britannia Hotel should tell you everything you need to know. Built in the colonial era and once an apartheid-era, whites-only bar, “Hotel Brits” has been under the Moodley family's dedicated stewardship since 1983. Now, it’s a Durban culinary landmark. Its bunny chow reputation was built by matriarch Logambal Moodley, whose recipes – passed down through generations of exceptional home cooks – still anchor the kitchen today. The masala spices are ground to a closely guarded secret formula, and the results speak for themselves across a whopping 14 varieties of bunny chow. Chandeliers and wallpaper notwithstanding, this is an eatery where rolling up your sleeves and eating with your hands feels par for the course.

Don't leave without trying:
