Set on a sprawling 3 000-hectare Merino sheep farm just off the N1, De Oude Kraal is more than a gorgeous stopover. Secreted in the original 1855 farmhouse is a fine-dining restaurant with serious culinary chops. Here, owner and chef Marie Lombard serves beautifully crafted, seasonal tasting menus designed to celebrate the symbiotic relationship between farm and table. There’s also the Marie Louise Bistro, where meals are slightly more relaxed but no less delicious. The De Oude Country Estate offers four-star accommodation, a well-appointed spa, and a roster of family-friendly activities, including horse-riding, clay-pigeon shooting, sheep-farm tours and even bachelor’s and bachelorette’s packages. Well worth a little road trip.
