Gounden’s Restaurant and Takeaway
A Durban institution, and a contender for the city's finest bunny chow.
Some restaurants earn their reputation not through innovation and flash, but by keeping things simple and consistently good over decades. Gounden's on Umbilo Road is exactly that kind of place. Unpretentious and reliable, it has been drawing South Africans of all backgrounds through its doors for more than 30 years; it’s the kind of spot where childhood memories are made and loyalties are lifelong. The menu covers the full spread of South African Indian classics – biryanis, curry and rice, curry rotis – but it's the bunny chows that people make the trip for. Spicy, saucy and full of flavour, they’ve been nominated for the title of best bunny chow in Durban by multiple authorities (no small feat). Serving roughly 350 bunnies daily to the dedicated locals who pack the joint, Gounden’s is proof that if you have good food and efficient service, you don’t need bells and whistles.
