Inspired by the iconic delis of New York and Montreal, brothers Adam and Joel Klein opened the first Kleinsky’s Delicatessen in Sea Point, Cape Town, in 2014. Today, there are not only branches in the Mother City, but in Johannesburg and London, too. This gem in Birdhaven captures that bustling deli energy, and is perfect for a delicious bite, good coffee and some people-watching, whether you’re there at 7am or 3pm. At the heart of it all are the bagels: slow-fermented overnight, boiled, then freshly baked daily for that signature chew and gloss. Fillings range from classic schmears and smoked salmon to the likes of schnitzel, chicken parmigiana and teriyaki brisket. Bagel dogs, burgers, hearty sandwiches, salads, soups and “noshes” (think latkes, pierogies and fried pickle spears) round out the comprehensive menu. It’s a fun, unfussy spot that brings the community together.

Don't leave without trying:
The lamb BLT bagel: Kleinsky's “lamb bacon”, lettuce, tomato and home-made mayo.
