Modern Tailors

Inspired by old-world tailoring shops and railway journeys across India, the interiors at Modern Tailors are packed with detail. Patterned tiles, carved wood, brass accents, vintage trunks and gleaming tableware all come together to create a feeling of playful opulence that goes down almost as well as the food here. The menu is an homage to India’s street-food vendors (or “roadside culinary masters”, as they’re described here), and traverses diverse regions and traditions. Start with okra fries and cauliflower croquettes, then move onto the much-loved lunchtime naan wraps or succulent tandooris and curries to cry for. Drinks are equally memorable: think fragrant berry-and-rose lassi or an expertly mixed “Bollywood Blonde” from the adjoining gin bar. Bottomless masala tea encourages you to forget any prior engagements you had. The restaurant stays true to its cultural identity, serving no pork or beef, while halaal, vegetarian and vegan-friendly options mean everyone is spoilt for choice.

The tandoori platter, a smorgasbord of chicken tikka, gunpowder wings (chargrilled spicy tikka masala wings served with put-put chutney), skinny lamb chops (rubbed with a special blend of tandoori spices, smoked in the tandoori pit, grilled until crispy and served with mint chutney.), lamb sheesh kebab (seasoned lamb mince mixed with onion, green chilli, coriander and ginger, then skewered and chargrilled) and crispy masala potatoes.
