This Soweto hotspot espouses a dedication to slow-smoked pit culture that is rarely seen outside Texas. It’s something of a hole-in-the-wall, leaning into the American smokehouse tradition of trading in fancy decor for an atmosphere that’s energetic, welcoming and almost obsessively focused on the food instead. The menu centres on low-and-slow barbeque: smoky brisket that pulls apart effortlessly and melts in your mouth; tender ribs you’ll go down to the cartilage on; sticky wings that’ll have you licking your fingers for every last drop of basting; and even smoked chicken’s feet. Accompanying sides include smokehouse classics like corn, mac and cheese, and smoky beans. There’s always a vibe here, too, thanks to Mpho Nkomo, the owner and self-taught chef who turned to cuisine after being retrenched in 2019. It’s a genuine neighbourhood hangout that also draws in diners from as far afield as the US and Europe.

Don't leave without trying:
The Grand Platter, a generous array of Something Smoked classics and sides.
