The Club House at the Claremont Cricket Club is the kind of casual, consistent “local” that every neighbourhood should have. It’s low-key but spacious, the view over the mountain is great, and it’s the perfect spot to grab a bite while you watch the game (or while the kids and dogs run around on the fields). The food is unfussy and without pretension, but well-made. There’s a good variety of small plates, and small substantial favourites such as The Clubhouse burger with crispy bacon and spicy relish, or a range of tasty pizzas. The mains promise everything from butter chicken to pork ribs and fried kingklip. It should be noted that the wine list offers good variety and at great value, too – when last did you see a Cape Town wine list where most of the bottles cost less than R300? Not recently! It’s the perfect venue for a relaxed day out.

Don't leave without trying:
The Behr pizza – chorizo, caramelised onions, Danish feta and jalapenos.
