If you find yourself feeling hungry in the seaside village of Kalk Bay in Cape Town, this unpretentious, family-friendly Portuguese restaurant should be at the top of your list. It couldn’t be situated closer to the sea, and the menu ticks all the boxes – fresh seafood, chicken, grills, platters for sharing (or not) and then some. The bench-style seating invites large gatherings; it’s the perfect spot for a celebration. Kick off with the likes of calamari, chicken livers, chorizo or traditional prawn cakes, then move onto mains but be warned that it’ll be difficult to choose. Queen prawns, calamari, mussels and fresh fish are just the beginning, there’s also peri-peri baby chicken, Portuguese steak, trinchado, espetada – the list goes on! The service is friendly and efficient – the owner is always up for a chat and will make you feel right at home. They don’t have a liquor licence so you’re welcome to bring your favourite bottle of wine – and there’s a Tops liquor store right next door if you forget.

Don't leave without trying:
The peri-peri prawns or chicken with chips.
