Dispens
A contemporary pantry, shop and eatery on the West Coast.
This informal restaurant in the West Coast fishing village of Paternoster has a three-star pedigree – it’s the casual sister eatery of award-winning Wolfgat, run by innovative chef Kobus van der Merwe. Set in the location of his first restaurant in Die Winkel op Paternoster, its name comes from “dispensary”, the name of rural outposts supplying vital supplies and ingredients to remote dwellers who couldn’t reach shops easily. It serves all-day breakfasts and light lunches prepared using typical West Coast ingredients. The breakfast menu will appeal to lovers of baked goods with fresh farm bread with butter, savoury scones, pies and sweet bakes. Lunch includes iconic local ingredients including snoek, limpets and bokkoms (dried fish), and Strandveld herbs such as dune spinach and soutslaai (ice plant) make regular appearances. There is also a deli and shop laden with home-made goods, from pickles to botanical soaps and hand-stitched linen. You’ll find it impossible to leave empty-handed.
