El Burro Green Point
An authentic Mexican restaurant serving flavour-packed, handmade tacos.
One of Cape Town’s first authentic Mexican restaurants is still producing punchy Mexican food from a location close to its original site. Sacha Berolsky, one of the owners, fell in love with the food after a trip to Mexico and opened El Burro on his return to the Mother City. You won’t find any Tex-Mex food here. Corn tortillas are hand-pressed daily (flour are also available), the salsas freshly made, and the limes squeezed for margaritas. The menu is short and simple: choose your filling and the number of tacos you want and get ready for a sensation. Fillings may include braised lamb, grilled fish, crispy duck, pork carnitas (with roast tomato-and-Serrano chilli sauce) chilorio pork (very spicy, be warned), chicken and a vegetarian option. There are also small-plate starters including chicharrónes (pork crackling) with sea salt and limes for squeezing, chillies rellenos (smoked jalapenos stuffed with queso fresco served with guacamole) and ceviche, among others. The cocktails are equally good – try the paloma for something super refreshing – and there’s a compact wine list and tequila, of course.
Don't leave without trying:
The fish and crispy duck tacos and the killer margarita cocktails.
