Chef Andile Somadaka has cooked for presidents – Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki – and has spent decades championing traditional South African ingredients and recipes. At Eziko, that passion finds its most personal expression, honouring Eastern Cape recipes with deep respect for the cooks who came before him. The menu is rooted in Xhosa culinary tradition, showcasing items such as umleqwa (heritage hardbody chicken reared on site), umngqusho, oxtail, steamed bread and chakalaka, all prepared with care and deep cultural knowledge. Eziko itself isn’t fancy – little more than a counter and a few seats for those who didn’t call ahead to order and collect – meaning the food clearly speaks for itself.
