French Connection has been a fixture on Franschhoek’s main road for over 20 years, is very much part of the town’s fabric and a popular spot for both lunch and dinner. The menu offers modern interpretations of classic French techniques, including the likes of moules frites (fresh mussels cooked in garlic, cream and white wine) served with French fries and toasted baguette; chicken liver parfait served with toasted baguette, red onion marmalade and cornichons; and a substantial charcuterie platter for starters. For mains, opt for seared lightly smoked Franschhoek trout; the best-selling veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce; or crispy roast duck with caramelised berries and raspberry vinegar jus. There are also steaks with traditional French-inspired sauces and roasted rack of lamb, when available. For dessert, try the tarte au citron, crème brûlée or warm Belgian chocolate tart. There’s a good wine list featuring wines from the region, and a concise cocktail list featuring all the favourites.

Don't leave without trying:
The tempura prawns and the fillet steak.
