Soi 55 Thai Eatery
Bangkok soul meets Ballito sunshine.
Soi 55’s chef-owner Goo Imthawin was born and raised in Bangkok before immigrating with his family to South Africa in the 1990s. His childhood memories are coloured by the tantalising aromas of Bangkok’s street-food stalls and of his own family preparing meals at home. Soi 55 is the expression of those memories and experiences: an upscale ode to street-food culture, with many dishes cooked over an open flame in full view of diners. Begin your pan-Asian feast with the likes of plump spring rolls, perfect potstickers and cloud-like bao, then choose from mains including Hibachi grills, wok wonders and proper Thai curries that are the perfect balance of heat and flavour. There’s a decent wine list, but you’d be remiss not to start with one of the signature Thai cocktails – try the Krabi Side, with Tarsier southeast Asian dry gin, lemongrass, chilli and lime leaf.
Don't leave without trying:
The Massaman curry (an aromatic southern Thai curry with potatoes, onions and peanuts), the duck Chu Chee (deep-fried and topped with red curry, lime leaf and basil coconut sauce), or the pad Thai.
