The first thing people notice at The Vine Bistro at Glenelly are the spectacular views from the estate, which is located on the slopes of Simonsberg mountain. The second thing they talk about is how surprisingly affordable the food is, given its quality (and the often pricey menus at other restaurants in the winelands). Expect French bistro-style dining with a modern twist: duck liver parfait with brioche toast, traditional cassoulet (Toulouse-style), and, for dessert, a chocolate marquise with orange Chantilly cream. The popular Sunday lunch menu changes often and offers good value, too. The wine list mostly showcases bottles from the estate, but there’s a large range and a nice selection by the glass. Service is friendly and attentive. If you’re in the mood for something unique, visit the glass museum, which holds a private collection of the owner’s artistic glass pieces. On balmy days, you’re going to want to ask for a table outside.

Don't leave without trying:
The apple tarte tatin.
