Also known as the unofficial “Portuguese embassy” in Cape Town, Vasco da Gama Taverna has been serving authentic Portuguese food since 1972 and shows no sign of stopping. Widely known as a place with great food, great vibes and a good spot to catch whatever sporting game is on, the Vasco remains a super-popular Cape Town institution. It’s a protein-forward venue that specialises in all the Portuguese favourites South Africans have come to love – well-made trinchado, espetada and very good pregos. Being Portuguese, there will also be seafood dishes of course, such as calamari and baby kingklip, and even vegetarians will find something suitable, such as a vegetarian moussaka. The decor is laid-back and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Fine-dining it is not – but that’s not what you’re looking for when you want to watch the rugby, is it?
